1. Background

You need a long-term relationship with a software company. You need them to fix bugs, do updates, and improve application features in the long run. Your customers won’t be too happy if they downloaded your company app, they became experts in using it, and they already know its different features, only to find out that they need to uninstall it. The reason for uninstalling is that the software company that you have hired decided to end things with your business and now, you are stuck. You now need to hire another company and begin everything from scratch.

Before deciding to hire a team of specialists, ask about how many years have they been in operation. Ask them to give you a description of the business model that they are using and their area of expertise. Know about their other clients and the number of years they are working together. You might also need to check the feedback of previous clients and make sure that most of them left a positive one.

2. List of Clients

The previous vendors that a software company has partnered with will give you an idea of how big they are. Ask about their previous projects and see if it’s related to the application model that you have in mind. Ask about the organizations that they previously served and ask them to provide you references. Some of the things that you might consider asking can include the number of clients that they have previously handled, the five most recent projects that they have finished and at least three references with complete contact information. More information about references in this site: http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/reference.html.

Know that the bigger the companies that they have served, the more expensive they will be. You might also want to know the nature of the software company’s job on the business. For example, were they the main IT person that major companies contact if there’s trouble? Or their involvement only includes one program out of the hundreds of programs that the corporation needs to operate the business?

3. Employees

A team where everyone has the expertise, experience, certificates, and qualifications will propel your company to success. A company’s employee structure may tell you how your business will operate in the next months. Some employees specialize in codes, the others specialize in marketing, the others do exclusive jobs for phone applications. Ask if how the company will handle if an employee is suddenly sick. Will there be anyone who will take over? Ask if an employee suddenly leaves his job. Is there someone who can contact him and will he give an update to the owner of what had been done and the things that’s still needed to be done?

You can ask the company about the certifications, education, attrition rate, and backgrounds of employee regarding IT. As much as possible, avoid hiring newbies if you the company don’t have the time to train them. You need to start developing your apps and your website as soon as possible. You won’t want your competitors to take the customers that are meant for you.

4. Costs

This is one of the most important factors that many small businesses consider before hiring a software company. When you are first starting, talk to as many companies as possible and get price quotes. You need to know the average cost for your current needs and the price of maintaining your apps right at the beginning of the negotiation.

Some companies provide pricing models that can complement your budget. Ask about the upfront costs, if there are hidden charges, taxes, maintenance expenses, and recurring expenses. Ask if the employees are billed every hour or if there’s a fixed price for the entire project. You can also set up a payment schedule with the company to make sure that everyone gets paid on time.

The Bottom Line

These are just some of the qualities that you need to consider when hiring a software development company. As long as you are sure that they will reach your goals, they are concerned with your business and its success, and they can meet your customers’ needs, then, consider them hired. Getting started with technology can be a complicated process. But with the right company, everything will be much easier and faster.
